Chapter 13: Your Ex-Boyfriend Came Knocking
When Lin Jiangye woke up, it was already midnight.
He had enjoyed an extremely high-quality deep sleep. When he opened his eyes again, he found himself lying on an unfamiliar bed.
His coat had been taken off and hung in the corner of the room. Over his shirt, someone had put a soft-textured hospital gown on him, and his entire body was filled with a warm, cozy temperature.
Three doctors stood around the bedside, neatly blocking the light source above him.
“Young Master Lin is awake? How do you feel now?”
Lin Jiangye hesitated for a moment. His gaze drifted outward as he slowly searched for Yu Wangxiao. He seemed a little embarrassed, and his voice was very soft. “…A little hungry.”
He did not know why he was still hungry. At the Gu family’s evening banquet, he had clearly already eaten until he was very full.
If he continued eating, this body’s fragile digestive system would definitely be unable to bear it.
“It’s not strange for someone who didn’t eat well as a child to have abnormal appetite after growing up.” The doctors were not surprised. Comparing his blood test results, they became thoughtful.
One middle-aged woman leaned a little closer, her tone gentle like she was coaxing a child. “At the moment, you still have mild malnutrition, and your trace elements are not quite up to standard. Young Master Lin, can you provide your nutritionist’s contact information?
“We need to customize your meal plan again. Relax and adjust slowly. In the future, you won’t have the urge to binge eat anymore.”
Lin Jiangye fell silent for a moment, then blinked in confusion. “May I ask, what is a nutritionist?”
This time, it was the doctors’ turn to fall silent. Their expressions of disbelief were almost impossible to suppress.
“You can understand it as… a private manager who professionally protects your physical and mental health,” the middle-aged woman paused. “It’s alright. Chairman Yu will arrange a new nutritionist for you. Young Master Lin, please rest well first. If you feel any discomfort, please tell us immediately.”
“Okay, thank you.”
Their footsteps were very light as they left, and the ward door quietly closed. Lin Jiangye curled himself back into the soft bedding and yawned.
He had originally wanted to nap for a little longer, but in the next instant, his eyes suddenly opened.
“Tsk, isn’t this just how the Lin family is? A whole family of cold-blooded lunatics. This young master being switched at birth might actually have been his good luck.”
“You guys came late, so you don’t know. Back then, when Lin Bingsheng’s wife had her second child, she brought the child here for a checkup. When I checked the medical records, I was stunned on the spot.”
“No, guess what happened. She had actually never vaccinated the child. Not a single shot! Didn’t expect that, right?”
“Even Director Li personally advising her was useless. She was firmly against vaccination, rambling about nanobots in vaccines and how injections would implant brain control… Yes, the delusions were pretty severe.”
“I immediately contacted Director Wang back then. But as soon as Lin Bingsheng heard the words psychiatry department, he turned around and punched Director Wang. It almost became huge news. Sigh, honestly, I’m still afraid they’ll come here and cause medical trouble.”
“Wait a second, Old Tang, so that’s the real reason Doctor Wang resigned and went independent? I thought he had a conflict of interest with our director because of that previous outsourcing project…”
“Who did you hear that rumor from? It’s complete nonsense. With Chairman Yu here, the director is practically living so comfortably he’s growing a beer belly. How could he care about those scraps?”
“There are things even Chairman Yu can’t handle… Like that young Master Yu. I’m really scared of his temper. Yesterday, he almost threw his crutch at my head.”
The doctors’ voices grew farther and farther away, yet thread by thread, they passed through the window ledge and the crack of the door, entering Lin Jiangye’s ears without any obstruction.
The VIP ward was designed to be extremely soundproof. Logically, he should not have been able to hear even a word or two.
Lin Jiangye’s expression gradually turned serious. He lifted the blanket and sat up, trying to focus his attention.
It was not an illusion.
He could even hear the rustling of white coats, the corner of a blood test sheet being lifted by the breeze, the creaking sound when a nose implant was squeezed, and the ballpoint pen hanging in a chest pocket bouncing up and down…
This was absolutely not within the range of perception humans could possess. This was power that belonged only to a god.
But he had merely slept.
He had only just woken up, yet as if he had received a blessing from the heavens, he had inexplicably recovered a little strength.
No wonder he was hungry again. It was not difficult to trace the source and find the reason. The favorability above Yu Wangxiao’s head must have advanced again.
Lin Jiangye really wanted to take it apart and study it carefully, then eat it.
Unfortunately, during the few times he had tentatively reached out to touch it, that faintly translucent pink light screen was like a water mirror. His fingertips passed straight through it, leaving not even the slightest trace of fragrance.
“Yu Wangxiao, just what kind of person are you…” He leaned against the headboard and muttered in distress.
“Hm? What about me?”
The moment his words fell, that familiar voice actually drifted eerily out from the sleeve of his hospital gown.
Lin Jiangye lowered his head and saw that the seemingly ordinary button on his left wrist had, at some unknown point, begun glowing with a faint red light.
A nearly miniature pinhole transmitter was hidden inside the wool threads threaded through the button.
Why did even the hospital gown have surveillance… Was this equipment something ordinary humans possessed in large quantities?
Seeing that Lin Jiangye remained silent, Yu Wangxiao laughed softly. “Did I scare you? Sorry, you can take it off.”
“You could also have chosen not to tell me and not let me know there was something abnormal about the cuff.” Lin Jiangye bent his finger and touched the texture of the button, seeming thoughtful. “This time, I didn’t notice it. But you told me. Next time, I’ll be able to discover it at a glance.”
“Between friends, courtesy should be returned. Since you’re willing to share your secret with me, I can’t hide too much either, right?”
“So that’s how it is… I see. Then I want to ask you something else.”
“Please.”
Lin Jiangye exhaled and became slightly more serious. “Old Madam Gu’s corpse—what exactly is its use, and where was it transported? Are you certain you can safely preserve them and that they won’t rise again?”
He asked very bluntly, because compared to those matters of love, hate, scheming, and conflict, this was what he needed to pay more attention to first.
If too many supernatural phenomena that did not match the original work appeared in this world, and there was also technological power beyond the era’s development, then as time passed, there would always be the risk of things going completely out of control. The consequences would be extremely serious.
As for what kind of serious consequences, Lin Jiangye was still not sure. He had only heard various rumors from the conversations of his former colleagues.
When the stable cycle of energy was no longer balanced, when the laws of all things gradually became chaotic, when the proportion of “awakened” characters exceeded a certain threshold…
It was said that the world would completely collapse, sinking into boundless silence and annihilation. Its destructive power would be so strong that it was enough to cause a true god to fall.
If it was merely changing the ending of the original work, that would still be fine. A story within a framework of settings would not produce any extreme situation. But if the entire world was moving toward uncontrollable chaos, then Lin Jiangye had to pay attention in advance and plan his next escape early.
Yu Wangxiao knew nothing about this, yet he did not show even the slightest surprise.
His soft laugh came through the speaker, faintly distorted. “Do you need an on-site investigation, Officer Lin? Before the sun rises, I’m at your service anytime.”
Lin Jiangye froze for a moment, and his serious mood was inexplicably scattered quite a bit. “Why are you calling me officer?”
“This is a joking method, a friendly interaction between friends.” He explained very patiently. “You can do the same to me.”
“Then…” Lin Jiangye thought for a moment. “Chairman Yu, you’re going on a business trip tomorrow. Will you have a lot of things to handle tonight? I think I disrupted your schedule.”
“…No need for Chairman Yu. Forget it, don’t worry. Your matters come first. As for the other miscellaneous work, He Chen will handle it.”
As soon as the words fell, He Chen, who was sitting across from Yu Wangxiao, abruptly raised his head, his expression changing.
His lips moved. He very much wanted to say something, but recalling his generous monthly salary and additional bonuses, he silently lowered his head again.
Yu Wangxiao was in a good mood. After discussing the arrangements for the “night investigation” with Lin Jiangye, he leisurely pressed the button to end the call, then raised his eyes to look at He Chen.
“Do you have something to say?”
He Chen exhaled. “Boss, you trust him?”
“Can’t I? He’s quite obedient, and very kind.” Yu Wangxiao curved his lips, his gaze returning to the laptop screen.
On the screen, Lin Jiangye ate a few slices of peeled sweet pomelo and honeydew, drank a small cup of energy drink, then curled himself back into the blanket.
Yu Wangxiao watched very intently, almost as if he were scanning him inch by inch, from his hair to the finest texture of his skin, unwilling to miss even the smallest detail.
The boss, whose usual words and actions were all very normal, had suddenly turned into a perverted surveillance maniac. This made He Chen feel a rare chill crawl across his scalp.
Considering that his boss paid more than generously, He Chen gritted his teeth but still could not hold back. “Forgive me for speaking frankly, but may I ask if this is truly your first time raising… being in a relationship?
“Even if you intend to form a marriage alliance with the Lin family, you shouldn’t let him know about the existence of Moros right now. This is very unsafe for the follow-up plan. Sorry, at present, I cannot trust Mr. Lin, and I must once again confirm your intentions.”
Yu Wangxiao was clearly not offended by this. He even nodded slightly, acknowledging He Chen’s concerns.
“Yes, it’s unsafe. But I don’t care.”
He Chen: “…”
Yu Wangxiao glanced at him, somewhat amused. “Don’t sneak glances at me like I’m an idiot. I’m not love-brained.”
“Ahem, yes, Boss.” A chill ran down the back of He Chen’s neck, and he immediately returned to work mode. “Chen Ming has already arrived. He’s waiting in the parking lot. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the airport, and Attorney Jiang will accompany you. When you’re done here, will you go to the old residence or back to Longjing Bay?”
“Longjing Bay. If you have time tomorrow, break Yu Lin’s leg again.”
As Yu Wangxiao said this without changing expression, he stood and put on his coat, then retied his casually loosened tie.
After such a chaotic day, he was still properly dressed and elegant, his temperament gentle, as if he were discussing some insignificant matter.
He Chen’s expression, however, gradually darkened. “Um, Boss, breaking Young Master Lin’s leg doesn’t seem to be within my scope of work.”
Yu Wangxiao paused, then smiled kindly. “Not breaking his leg is fine too. Keep an eye on him. If he goes to cause trouble for Lin Jiangye, your year-end bonus will be completely deducted.”
“Hm?! Okay… understood.”
He Chen said nothing more. Only the movement of him pushing up his glasses was especially forceful.
Unfortunately, this damn task of preserving his huge year-end bonus was far more difficult than he had imagined.
He knew that since his boss had suddenly tidied his clothes, he definitely wanted to go find Lin Jiangye. So He Chen very tactfully stood up and stepped forward to push open the door leading to the corridor.
Unexpectedly, in the next instant, a metal crutch that had appeared from who knew where came flying straight toward his face with the wind.
Bang—!
He Chen’s hand immediately moved toward the inside of his suit, instinctively preparing to counterattack, but Yu Wangxiao grabbed him by the collar and threw him aside. He fell back onto a nearby sofa.
And that crutch, under his shocked gaze… heavily struck Yu Wangxiao’s left shoulder, making a dull, teeth-aching sound.
If Yu Wangxiao had not tilted his head slightly, and the metal object had landed on his head, something serious might have happened.
“Young Master Lin, what are you doing? Why did you attack Chairman Yu?!”
After a deathly silence, He Chen suddenly roared. Under the probing gazes of everyone near the ward, he directly defined the vile nature of the incident.
“…Little Uncle?”
Yu Lin’s voice sounded somewhat surprised, but not very. It even carried quite a bit of schadenfreude.
Yu Wangxiao raised his hand and brushed over the wrinkles in his suit jacket. His expression did not change, but his tone was rarely more serious. “Yu Lin, this time you’ve gone too far. I won’t help hide this from your parents.”
Hearing this, Yu Lin laughed carelessly. His cold and sharp face emerged from the shadows of the corridor. His leg was still in a cast, and he was supporting himself with another metal crutch in one hand. Limping closer, he lazily raised his brows at Yu Wangxiao.
Yu Wangxiao did not look at him. He lowered his head and smoothed the slightly messy crease at his cuff. “Was that fun? Tonight, you injured a Yu Group employee. Tomorrow’s A City headlines…”
Before he could finish, he was casually interrupted.
“Fine, fine, fine. My fault.” Yu Lin smiled wantonly, and the words he spoke became increasingly sharp. “Sorry, Little Uncle, the one I wanted to hit wasn’t you. But… don’t act like an elder and lecture me either. Move aside. Where’s that old bastard surnamed Chen?”
Only then did Yu Wangxiao, who had been obsessed with tidying his appearance, finally deign to raise his eyes. He looked at him thoughtfully and asked indifferently, “Did Chen Ming offend you?”
Yu Lin hated this attitude of Yu Wangxiao’s most, as if he did not take him seriously. He abruptly raised his crutch and pointed it at Yu Wangxiao, his anger almost impossible to suppress.
“He dared stop me from seeing Lin Jiangye, so he should have prepared himself to be beaten to death by me. A guy I rode around like a dog since childhood, and now you actually have him follow Lin Jiangye closely. Yu Wangxiao, you’re ridiculous too. What do you mean by this? Are you a pervert?
“You snatched my person so eagerly to hide him in a golden house. What, did your impotence of many years finally get cured? Or were you born with some special fetish for stealing other people’s things?”
He was not only venting his emotions. By deliberately using all sorts of vicious words, he more or less wanted to provoke Yu Wangxiao into losing control and showing anger.
But Yu Wangxiao only smiled helplessly, then turned to the assistant on the sofa, who did not dare breathe loudly. “He Chen, give Chen Ming two extra months of bonus. He’s worked hard.”
“Yes, Boss.”
“Yu Wangxiao, you fucking—”
“Stop. Haven’t you cursed enough?”
Yu Wangxiao’s tone abruptly turned cold, and he suddenly looked down at Yu Lin from above.
He was half a head taller than Yu Lin. A faint coldness flowed through his deep black eyes. There was no sharp reprimand in his words, yet somehow, Yu Lin lost his voice for a long while.
“Don’t forget, you are the eldest young master of the Yu family. In a public place, with a broken leg, do you really want everyone to admire your disgrace?”
The patients and medical staff who had quietly squeezed over to watch the commotion all hurriedly softened their movements upon hearing this, turning their heads and holding their breaths as they silently waited for Yu Lin’s reaction.
Two men no one dared control stood facing each other just like that in front of the hospital VIP room.
At this very moment, only one person’s footsteps and breathing gradually came from the end of the corridor, growing clearer and clearer in the “empty” hallway, as if completely unaware of the tense atmosphere.
The footsteps stopped. Lin Jiangye stood still while supporting himself against the wall. The slightly loose gray-white hospital gown hung on his body, and the cold light fell over his sleepy brows and eyes. His crow-black lashes drooped slightly, casting shadows, inexplicably emphasizing a cold, sickly unfamiliarity.
At least to Yu Lin, it was very unfamiliar. When he looked over after hearing the sound, he was unable to control himself and froze for a second.
For some reason, the irritation that had already been gnawing at his heart suddenly surged even more.
Yu Lin had no intention of analyzing himself. He only habitually ordered him, without any good attitude. “What are you doing here? Go back to bed and lie down.”
This time, the order received no response at all.
Confusion appeared on Lin Jiangye’s pale face. He glanced at Yu Lin, his gaze quickly sweeping past him, then locked straight onto Yu Wangxiao’s left shoulder.
The dark suit jacket was enough to conceal the bright red liquid, but in front of Lin Jiangye, that extremely fresh wound… was like a rich and dreamlike beautiful halo.
He really wanted to take a bite. But he could not expose his almost perverted, strange appetite.
He had to find a way to endure it for now.
So Lin Jiangye worked hard to keep his face tense, and because of this, his tone became cold and stiff. “Yu Wangxiao, I smelled blood. Explain.”
“Mm, Tuantuan, your ex-boyfriend came knocking. He hit me.”
“…Hm?” Lin Jiangye froze.
Yu Wangxiao lowered his eyes and sighed softly. “You won’t uphold justice for me, and you’re being so fierce to me? I’m a little hurt.”
